About

Ambient Light is my personal photo blog project. All of the images you see here were taken by me personally. Photography is a hobby of mine. I’ve been taking photos with SLRs for well over 10 years. Only within the last six years or so have I switched to digital and been concentrating on photography as an art.

What is Ambient Light?

Ambient light is a term used to describe the type of lighting of a photo or scene. A scene lit with Ambient Light uses available light that is typically not changed by the photographer. This could be light from the sun, or existing fixed lighting, such as incandescent or fluorescent light, but not a flash or other lighting added by the photographer.

This is also known as existing light or available light.

It is the most common form of lighting used in amature, guerilla, street, landscape, and many other types of photography.

Ambient Light may also be used in conjunction with other forms of lighting, such as fill lighting, where an additional light, such as a flash, is used to either show detail in the shadows created by the Ambient Light, or create contrast or hilights the subject.
